"One has also to accept that however much a photographer believes in going out into the world with the film a blank tablet that is ready to have anything written on it, the fact is that the photographer is, at one stage of the recording process or another, hugely selective - even those photographers who expose several rolls of film between getting out of bed and having breakfast. They are still, for example, exercising control over which brief fractions of a second from the whole time frame are to be recorded. Two rolls of film with each frame exposed at, say, 1/60 second capture, in total, a little more than a single second of elaped time. It is natural to conclude that photographers must learn to hone finely every aspect of the art - from technical control to aesthetic content - to refine every aspect of their thinking. This strategy, however, could not be more assured of failure. On the other hand, opening yourself to whateer life offers in not to be totally passive. Wise photographers deny themselves neither control nor accident, but allow both intervention and detachmnet. the Tao of photography is in the meandering between opposing strategies - like a river between its banks - out of which arises a richer photography."

It is simply too cold at 25 below zero F. to do more than play in the digital darkroom, read, and dream of warmer days ahead.
