After taking thousands of photos at dog shows, I found myself in my neighbor's yard trying to get some photos of my own dogs with a nice backdrop of her gardens and newly seeded lawn. If you've ever worked with dogs you know that they are a lot like children - not the most cooperative models. I took a break to renew my energy and soon found myself experimenting with the macro features of my new camera. An hour later the dogs are sound asleep in the shade and I have taken hundreds of photos of the flowers, trees, and surrounding native plants. Amazing what a cooperative model a plant can be. Something so rooted and yet the essence of light itself. Now, whenever I want to relax - I go to the woods or a nearby garden.
Tom Ang writes in his book Tao of Photography:
"The open and relaxed nature of working with plants means you can experiment, meditate, observe, and generally spend as much time as you want allowing your imagination to wander where it pleases. the tangle of lifeforms will dance before your mind with meanings just beyond revelation. As you concentrate more and more on such subjects, you may discover that there is no clear water between meditation and photography."
So - Valentine's Day - roses everywhere! I have always loved flowers.
